In the escalating political climate of the near future where strategies on the battlefield must be delicately balanced with maneuvers at the negotiating table a new breed of soldier has arisen. Trained to be better than the best and outfitted with the most comprehensive array of high-tech gear ever assembled, the future soldier stands apart by his ability to remain undetected. He slips unseen behind enemy lines. He uses the perfect combination of diplomacy and force to achieve his objectives while remaining politically invisible. He is a Ghost.

E3 2011: Ghost Recon: Future Soldier hands-on preview

Ghost Recon: Future Soldier feels like it's been on the horizon for roughly forever now – well, a couple solid years at least – and while it still isn't planned to release until 2012, the intense demo we played at E3 2011 at least assured us that the tactical shooter is well on its way to completion and looking great.

We tried both a campaign mission and multiplayer battle, with the former offering frenzied scripted moments amidst a rescue and extraction mission in Nigeria. It's the third mission in the game, which begins with the Ghosts attempting to halt an arms smuggling operation; in doing so, they reveal a much larger plot. Classic Tom Clancy. With a captured CIA agent to snag and some precious intel to recover, the Ghosts sneak and storm into battle in a four-player co-op campaign that can also be played individually with AI squadmates. The demo did an excellent job of introducing the new synchronized maneuvers, which let you coordinate a silent four-man kill from cover (every player marks the guy he's going to tag, then you all shoot at once) or trigger other essential actions. We began the mission by performing such an execution on a group of enemies standing on a dock as we watched from the water grass, and later got ourselves in the best position to safely and effectively breach doors. We even popped a few targets right through the thin walls of a shack. As the mission twisted through the dusty Nigerian streets, we eventually found ourselves moving between cover in an open area, taking down soldiers en route to the kidnapped agent.

It's then that the tenor of the battle really kicked up a notch and delivered on Future Soldier's stated promise: to both reward strategic teamwork and tap into the bold action aesthetic of blockbuster shooters. As the Ghosts attempted to extract the target from the battlefield, they huddled into a diamond formation and the game shifted into a highly cinematic scripted sequence in which movement was automated and survival took center stage. For a solid minute or so, the team moved slowly ahead, popping off oncoming enemies from all angles and avoiding helicopter fire behind barricades. Longtime series fans might bristle at losing full control for such a segment, but it was a monumentally powerful moment that really stood out amidst all the shooters we saw at E3. Naturally, multiplayer factors heavily into the Future Soldier experience, with eight-on-eight online battles, four play modes, and 10 maps promised on the disc. We played one of those modes – the objective-oriented Conflict – and a producer confirmed that some version of the series' classic Siege mode is also in the mix. The map we played, titled Overpass, depicted a battle to rescue a convoy trapped by terrorists between a fallen overpass and barricades. We played it in a four-on-four configuration, and the match really served as a great introduction to the new cover swap feature, in which you can designate a spot in view for your soldier to quickly and easily run to by holding down the proper button. It makes defensive play easier and more versatile than ever, and in the midst of a hectic battle, you'll need every advantage you can swing.

As demonstrated during Microsoft's press conference, the Xbox 360 version of Ghost Recon: Future Soldier supports Kinect for the Gunsmith mode, in which you can craft and test out firearm configurations using your hands and voice. It's an interesting perk that will no doubt help that version pick off a few players that were considering another platform, as it seemingly serves as a great living room demo of the Kinect's capabilities. Whether hardened series fans will come back to it otherwise remains to be seen, but it's interesting tech for sure.

It's been an arduously long wait since Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 launched in early 2007 (the recent Wii and PSP ones don't count; the 3DS one does!), but that fevered anticipation seems sure to be rewarded when Future Soldier drops next year on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

Ghost Recon : Commander

Ubisoft is almost throwing out too much Ghost Recon to keep up with, as today they announced Ghost Recon Commander. GR:Commander is a Facebook game that will interact with both Ghost Recon Online and Ghost Recon Future Soldier.

"By playing Commander before Future Soldier comes out, it's going to let you accumulate a little bit of wealth and some weapons so you have some sort of advantage"

Gunsmith for Future Soldier

In an impressive demonstration at E3 today, Ubisoft drew audible gasps from the audience with it's matrix-esque Gunsmith feature for Ghost Recon Future Soldier on the Xbox 360.

With Gunsmith, Ubisoft explained, gamers will be able to create 20 million customised weapons in Future Soldier using hand gestures or even voice commands only.

A Step forward in Ghost Recon Future Soldier

Ghost Recon: Future Soldier has emerged from cover after a full year of silence, and things have changed. After a lukewarm reception at last year's show, Ubisoft took Ghost Recon: Future Soldier back to the drawing board, scrapping a good chunk of the already developed game. The stark, de-saturated visual style Ubisoft showed at its 2010 E3 press conference is gone. The "new" visual style is actually quite familiar, somewhere between Ghost Recon Future Soldier's original dark look and the bright color palette of the Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter games. It's a surprising change given how much Ubisoft stressed the series' move to a gritty, post global-warming future.

Now, instead of the seemingly-solo focused and stylized game previously on display, Ubisoft is refocusing the series on cooperative play. That's one of Ghost Recon Future Soldier's three pillars: the squad. From campaign to multiplayer, there's a running thread: Work together or die. In the campaign, there are new tools enabling players to work together. Teammates can revive each other when downed, and allies can mark hazards like grenades, depending on their selected perks and abilities. This is part of the intel system in Ghost Recon Future Soldier. There are 13 ways to collect intel, and as Ubisoft stressed at our pre-E3 event a couple of weeks ago, one man with Intel is better than three without, making it another one of Ghost Recon Future Soldier's pillars. Players will want to keep this in mind while making their way through missions, as enemies are as likely to be a source of information as not. Taking them down stealthily without killing them yields an interrogation that can completely change your understanding of the battlefield. Then there are the Ghost Recon standbys, like UAVs, which allow better coordination between teammates and provide recon in unfriendly areas. Reconnaissance could save a life too, and not just your own - civilians play a part in Ghost Recon Future Soldier, as your team of ghosts are frequently tasked with moving through urban combat zones without benefit of an absent local populace. Of course, with Intel and squad dynamics comes the final pillar, combat. Unfortunately, this is Ghost Recon Future Soldier's Achilles' heel right now. Game performance is rough, and this currently has a major effect on controls and general combat effectiveness. Put simply, the cover system is only sort of working, and aiming and movement are sluggish. There's a decent amount of heft to the weapons, but firefights are as much a struggle against frustration as the enemies coming toward you. Still, Ghost Recon Future Soldier has even more time before release to get it all together - it's been delayed from a Fall 2011 release window to some time in 2012. It seems clear that Ubisoft is willing to give Ghost Recon Future Soldier as much time as they need to in order to make it the game that brings the series back to relevancy in the modern shooter environment, and that respects the series' ten-year legacy.

Ghost Recon Future Soldier Delayed .

Ubisoft have announced that Ghost Recon Future Soldier is to be delayed into the 2011-12 release timetable.

This notable delay differs from the usual "slippage" that Ubisoft customers are familiar with though, this is a major delay, possibly borne out of a major re-think on the future of Future Soldier. Recent rumours regarding a shake up of personnel at the top end of the salary scale on the Future Soldier project add credance to any suspicion of a major revamp on the direction of Future Soldier. One thing is for sure, after reading Ubisoft's Financial Report released today, more so than ever before, Ubisoft need their next Ghost Recon to be a huge success across all platforms, and that can only be good for the fans.

Ghost Recon: Predator.

So things are going pretty slow on the news front, while interest in the next Ghost Recon game seems to have dipped after E3, we are still optimistic about the next installment.

So although there has been no official confirmation, its been spreading around that Ghost Recon: Predator will be a new exclusive PSP game.

Predator was first spotted last year as a mystery trademark registered in Australia. According to this ESRB entry though, the Predator title is specifically for the PSP.

Xbox 360 slim.

At its E3 press conference today, Microsoft announced the brand-new Xbox 360 redesign. Smaller and quieter, the new Xbox 360 comes with built-in WiFi and a 250 GB hard drive. The wait for the new Xbox 360 is short, too. Very short. The new Xbox 360 ships today and will be in retail later this week. The machine costs $299, the same price as the existing 250 GB model.

The new Xbox 360 is primarily glossy black. There appears to be more vents on it for heat dispersion. The front of the machine has a sharper indent than the current hourglass design.

As if that was not enough of a surprise, Microsoft also announced that anybody at the theater for the press conference would get their mittens on a new Xbox 360 even sooner: Microsoft is shipping them a new machine immediately.
